cracking the code!

I am looking at the time coding used by Kodak to time code Hitlers reign which will give me a visual reference for the treatment of homosexuals whilst he was in power. This method of coding already takes on a Brockmann look which is the style I am aiming for.

creating codes

Whilst looking at the time codes used by kodak and looking how to adapt that into a personal style I started thinking about my own personal coding that i have within my tattoos that i have designed. Above is two examples, these were the actual designs used to trace my now permanent markings. They are based on times, places & people in my life when I designed them. The top one is my blood family, each line represents my; Mum, Dad, Brother 1, Brother 2 and Myself. The lower one is a design that captured 25 years of my life, each line representing a time, place or person that made me who i was when i reached 25.

I think I will use my personal style along with the kodak dating system to create some visuals for each year. Until now i never really thought of my tattoos as having a certain style but after researching such artist as Brockmann I can see that my own personal style is similar to his and that of many swiss designers. I think i may have just found my angle!.

time code research

further research into the time coding of kodak films, these give a breakdown of each year clearly, there is also a slit marking chart that i rather like so may try to work that into my own time code design.

time code research

research i was looking at for creating a 'time-code' to represent the reign of hitler of which he punished homosexuals. I researched in the past about the time coding kodak use on film so each negative can be dated without using an obvious date such as '12-11-08'. They created a sequence of symbols to represent each year. I have chosen to create 13 images, one for each year of hitlers reign, the images wont be anything to do with hitler directly, i am just using his reign length to give me a time frame. The images will be created in a bauhaus, swiss, brockmann style with a time coding system that i will create from the kodak codes.

FEED magazine brief - fuck legibility!

my spread for the FEED magazine which is titled 'fuck legibility'. I wanted to create a design that supported my text and show a strong design element. The article is all about how as graphic designers we are expected to create top of the range, cutting edge designs but at the same time we have to consider legibility. It argues that in a world obsessed with the way things look then does it really matter what it says? I quote Carson and also throw in a few off the wall thoughts of my own, the closing line to the article being 'you may have read this and be thinking what a load of old crap, but that doesn't really matter, i wasn't trying to write a masterpiece, just create one!'

FMP nazi segregation

maps of the death camps drawn by guards & survivors from memory. All the original documents including maps were destroyed when the camps were shut down.

FMP nazi segregation

a mock up visual from my sketch book;
the guards at the concentration camps use to use the homosexual inmates as target practice, the pink triangle that they were made to wear was used for alignment.

pages from my research book -nazi segregation

FMP nazi segregation

So i have been up for the past 5 hours reading all about the rise of Hitler to try & gain some background knowledge of why he had such homophobic views along with well know fact of being a campaigner for antisemitism and so far i am only as far as him getting into full power around 1933 with the enabling bill that gave him dictational powers. Now i have never claimed to hold any knowledge of political battles past or present so this has been a reeducating experience for me, and if i am honest one i was scared to take on. When in talks with Clyde about my final major project i never thought it would take this direction and when this topic came up i admit i was initially not very keen to do a project that was based on such rooted and detailed facts based around political wars, but i have to now say that i am very pleased it has taken this route, i am questioning my knowledge as an individual and learning things that i have always wanted to shy away from through lack of knowledge. As an person and a graphic designer i should be learning about my surroundings, past and present, facing a few fears along the way.

Im finding this research aspect of my project fascinating, i am sat here reading about one of the most hated men of our times, one that i should initially feel hatred towards as a mark of respect for the treatment towards individuals of the same sexual orientation as myself, but as i sit here reading about his finely tuned plans of domination & his use of propaganda i cant but admire him as much as it cuts me up. For an individual to be so narrow minded, hateful & inhuman, he had the tactics of a genius & i can see how people fell for it.

I want to close my book & throw it across the room, but i just cant stop reading on.....

FMP Research

Was looking at a few government campaigns regarding selective issues that define people & came across the latest dementia campaign, i like the way that the message is delivered in a very real & honest way, kind of makes it feel very close to home.

Another piece i found interesting was on you tube, it was made as a kind of anti pigeon hole piece, its not that great but i like the concept of people making statements about themselves but these statements dont define who they are. I dont know how to upload video from you tube so its just a copy & paste link:\

record sleeve designs - covers

I didnt want to try & theme the covers to the type of music as i felt i didnt know enough about each style. So i kept the cover designs very style based, working with the circles created for the mock magazine & company ethos guide.

record sleeve designs - inspiration

i found this design online which is where the look for the dirty dog label came from with the rough black & white feel with an edgy rough press printed feel.

record sleeve designs

some work that i did to try & create a theme for the record label. I started to also look at the label producing a magazine. also a selection of logo designs including the final design.

record sleeve designs

inspiration for my designs of record covers. Im not a music person & will confess to knowing nothing about the different styles. So when this brief was launched i was immediately worried, so decided to approach it from a purely design angle & stay clear of referencing any styles of music, bands etc. These covers caught my eye, i love the old style record sleeves as appose to a cd cover so decided to have that as my format.

FMP Research

extract from a blog i have been looking at for my research into branding on more of a global scale, who better to study when it comes to trying to create or understand branding than these guys.....

FMP Research

So i been looking at the whole human branding thing from a personal identity point of view, looking at how we present ourselves & how we see others, also looking a little at what makes us who we are, ie; race, sex, sexuality, religion etc. These are a few snap shots from my research book.
